Culinary arts is the skilled practice of creating food by cooking. Majoring in culinary arts demands a passion for creating different types of food in an interesting and professional way. Many different types of culinary arts educations are available in the Macomb County, Michigan, area for you to achieve an education in the culinary arts field.

  1. Macomb Community College

    • Founded in 1954, Macomb Community College offers more than 200 degree programs. The college presents students with three different options for an education in culinary arts. The first is an associate of applied arts degree, which consists of 51 credit hours of career component classes and 18 credit hours of arts and science classes. They also offer a certificate in culinary management and a special-skill certificate as a prep cook. All of the courses are taught by certified chefs. The program's accreditation comes from the Higher Learning Commission, and they are a member of the North Central Association. The institution participates in federal financial aid, and students may complete a FAFSA to determine individual eligibility.

    Dorsey Schools

    • Founded in 1934, the goal of Dorsey Schools is to provide a short-term, comprehensive curriculum that will prepare the graduating student for direct entry into their chosen field. The culinary arts program at Dorsey is an accelerated 48-week term. It includes preparation for the national restaurant ServSafe exam and valuable experience during an externship. Students who enroll in this program prepare for careers such as sous chef, baker or food-preparation cook. Students at Dorsey Schools are eligible to complete a FAFSA for federal student aid. There are also several school scholarships available for which students can apply.

    The Art Institute of Michigan

    • The Art Institute of Michigan offers students three different options in the field of culinary arts. The first is an associate of applied arts degree in culinary arts. The program contains 96 total credit hours dispersed through culinary courses and general subjects, such as science, humanities and fine arts. The second option is a bachelor's degree in culinary management. Graduates of this program take general education and culinary management courses and complete a management externship. A total of 180 credit hours is necessary for graduation. The third option in the culinary arts programs is a professional baking and pastry certificate. This program is designed for students who already have a degree in a culinary discipline and who would like to expand their expertise. The certificate requires 36 credit hours of baking and pastry specialty classes. The Art Institute of Michigan participates in federal financial aid, and students can complete a FAFSA to determine individual eligibility.

    Party Cakes Decorating Supplies

    • For those who do not wish to embark upon a culinary arts career, but who simply want to improve their technique or learn a new hobby, Party Cakes Decorating Supplies store offers community classes. Classes range from one-night instruction on a specific topic to a four-week course on beginner cake decorating. Courses range in price from $25 to $45, with students required to register at least two days prior to the start of the class. Class sizes are limited, and students are responsible for paying for their own supplies.
