Creative Designs for Names

Coming up with a design for a name, whether it is a company name or personal name, can be an effective way to draw attention to your name and make it stand out. This type of design, also known as a logo, has been an important part of marketing and branding for more than a century. Some companies and celebrities design their own logos, but many people choose a graphic designer to help create the perfect name design.

  1. Name and Design Combinations

    • Consider combining the name of your company and a design element together. This typically involves turning one or more letters of the name you're using into the design itself. An example would be to take the first letter of the name and make it larger than the rest of the word, extending it around the rest of the name so it works as a border as well as the first letter of the name. Another idea would be to make one of the letters a graphic image, such as flowers or something with the look of architecture.

    Graphic Only Logo Designs

    • For a company or person that is well known, a graphic-only logo design may work. This might include using initials rather than the entire name and making the initials look more like an image or some type of graphic. Without using the entire name, consider making the initials more ornamental to give the logo a more artistic presentation.

    Name Only Designs

    • If you want a logo to focus strictly on the name, avoid using any type of graphic elements that might draw away from the name. If you do use a graphic element, such as a picture, make it small in relation to the name. The design element that will make a name stand out without using graphic elements is the choice of font (lettering style). Gothic, cursive, Olde English and block designs are some styles you can use for plain name designs.

    Metaphorical Designs

    • Consider the purpose of your name. Incorporate metaphorical ideas to strengthen the name. An eagle might be a symbol to incorporate into a name logo if the name has American in it or you want to suggest freedom. Be cautious when using a metaphor. Always ensure the metaphor you use is appropriate to the image you want to present.
