Portland, OR Police Salary
As of January 2011, more than 1,000 sworn personnel served with the Portland Police Bureau, the largest police agency in the state of Oregon. The pay scale of officers reflects performance upon initial entry exams, previous law enforcement or military experience, and seniority. Portland police officers work a 40 hour workweek with seniority dictating shifts and days off.

The Portland Police Bureau categorizes officers into two categories: Entry Level and Lateral Officers. Entry Level personnel are uniformed police who have a high school diploma or equivalent. Lateral Officers have come into the department with three years or more of continuous service in another state, city or county, or with time served in the military.
Salary

An Entry Level police officer in their first 6 months on the job earned $21.02 per hour and $43,722 annually as of January, 2011. After one year, the pay increases to $56,680. After 5 years, an Entry Level officer earns $71,656. A Lateral Officer with an undergraduate degree and three years of experience will earn $56,680 per year. If an officer is coming to Portland after 10 years of experience in a previous department, Lateral Officers earn $63,794. Officers in either category who serve more than 16 years of continuous duty will have their pay increase 2 percent. At 21 years, pay will increase by 4 percent and those who have put in more than 26 years will see a 6 percent increase. Further additional pay is granted to those officers performing hazardous duty including motorcycle patrols, drug investigations and explosives work.

Officers receive benefits on top of their salaried pay that include 95 percent paid coverage of medical, dental and vision benefits; overtime pay and paid time off. Officers are granted $50,000 in life insurance benefits after 6 months of employment as well as 100 percent retirement benefits. Uniform, weapon, body armor and additional equipment are provided as well as a $90 dollar equipment allowance for uniformed officers and $390 dollars for plain clothes officers. Additionally, Portland police do not pay social security tax.
Vacation and Leave

Officers are granted paid time off annually in the form of nine holidays, three personal days and 13 sick days. Personnel serving up to four years of continuous duty receive 80 hours of paid vacation time. Officers serving five to nine years receive 120 hours. Vacation hours increase by increments of 20 hours for 15 to 19 years, 20 to 24 years and cap at 200 hours annually for those officers with 25 years or more on the force.
