First Day Activities for First Grade Math
If you are teaching the first grade and need some activities for the class to do on its first day of classes, there are a number of different math options. Because this is the first day of classes, it is best to review concepts that were learned in kindergarten and to get an idea of where the class is in terms of retention. The best way to do this is through worksheets and other fun activities.

Tracing Numbers

Begin by handing out worksheets with different numbers on them that allow the students to trace the numbers multiple times (in order to get a sense of the numerical representation) and also to see the number illustrated on the sheet. For example, the worksheet should have a tracing section and a section that shows two turtles so the student can visualize the concept.
Count and Color Worksheets

Count and color worksheets force the students to count the number of pictures that appear on the page and to come to conclusions on their own as to how many are there. Once they have calculated the correct amount, give them five to 10 minutes to color in their pictures.
Connect-the-Dots

Connect-the-dots worksheets that require the student to connect the dots in the order that numbers appear in our numeric system are a great way to reinforce their numbers and instill confidence in terms of repetition. Connect-the-dots pictures also allow for another coloring opportunity, which will make it more fun for the kids.
Matching

Matching worksheets combine most of the elements in the first three and allow students to match the numerical representation of the number with a picture showing that particular amount. This allows for sensory-imagery reinforcement and helps to solidify the concepts for the students.
