Fun Singing Games

Fun Singing Games thumbnail
If you need an evening of fun, try a singing game.

You don't have to be a famous pop star to enjoy singing your favorite songs. Karaoke machines are common place, but you don't need to hunt down a karaoke bar to sing either. Fun singing games that you can play in your own home, alone or with friends, are available, and some are even free.

  1. Console Games

    • The most famous console singing game currently in publication is "SingStar," published by London Studio for the Playstation consoles. Two players sing the lyrics of original songs and are scored based upon how well their singing matches the requested pitch. Up to eight players can play using the "Pass the Mic" mode, which divides the players into two teams and has them pass the microphone around. Dozens of versions of the game have been released for the Playstation 2 and 3. Another popular singing game is "Karaoke Revolution." This game is made by Konami, makers of the popular dancing game "Dance Dance Revolution." Unlike "SingStar," however, all the songs in "Karaoke Revolution" are current popular songs. The series "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero: World Tour" also contain a singing component, along with the ability to play plastic guitars and drums.

    PC Games

    • "SingStar" serves as the inspiration to the freeware game "UltraStar." "UltraStar" doesn't come with any music, though it does come with instructions on how to create karaoke versions from your own collection of songs. It can also import music from your "SingStar" game DVDs. Sites such as UltraStarStuff.com even provide downloads of lyric files for your favorite tracks (though not the music itself), already formatted to work with "UltraStar."

    Online Games

    • Sites like KaraokeParty.com and GirlsGoGames provide a variety of fast and simple free singing games that can be played directly in your web browser. They are not as sophisticated as "SingStar," "Karaoke Revolution," or "UltraStar," but if you just need to sing, they can scratch the itch for awhile. Just plug in your microphone, open your browser, and sing away.

    Traditional Singing Games

    • Of course you don't need a video game system to play singing games. You can download some popular singing games that you can play with nothing but a group of friends from the Kentucky Music Educators Association. These games challenge players to identify a musical rhyme just from the clapping of the beat or to improvise lyrics at key points in the song.
