Creative Ministry Ideas for Women

Women's ministry ideas include celebrating birthdays.

Most ministries for women include study of scripture. However, women need fellowship and an outlet to reach out to others, and mothers need time a safe place for their children and time away from their children. A ministry to women finds creative ways to meet the needs of the women not only from their congregation, but also drawing women in who need the resources a women's ministry can provide.

Birthday Bash

Plan for 12 tables, each one representing a month of the year. Have the women work in groups to decorate the tables for a particular month, using gemstone or other colors particular to each month. Each group is also in charge of providing a cake decorated for that particular month as well as nut cups or other decorations. Provide coffee, tea, water and other refreshments. Let each group decide which women will preside over the table the night of the event. Invite women from the congregation and encourage them to bring friends. Everyone sits at her birthday table, though guests might wish to stay with the people who invited them. Offer birthday-based prizes throughout the evening.

Memory Jar Crafting

Offer women crafting sessions. Crafting sessions can include scrapbooking, creating greeting cards or making a simple crafts for their children. Women can also make a memory jar. Have the women bring small items, or pieces of items that hold special memories for them. Items may include a pressed leaf from that special bouquet, a button off the dress worn at a daughter's wedding or a charm received for a special event -- things that help them recall special events in their lives. Provide a clear jar for each woman. Allow the women to organize their memory items as they see fit. To make sure items stay visible on the outside, place an empty tissue roll into the jar and layer the items around the cardboard roll. You may wish to offer different types of potpourri for those who wish to give their memory jars a touch of fragrance.

Kids Night Out

Plan an evening of activity for children. Include tables or stations with different crafts geared for the ages of the children. Make sure to ask women to pre-register for this event so you know how many children for which to plan. Include crafts, games and a short devotional time for the children. Get the youth ministry involved in helping children with the activities and crafts. While the children are occupied, offer a time of fellowship, discussion and study for the women.

Sepcial Friends

List the names of all the women in the congregation regardless of whether they attend meetings. Add in friends, family members or other contacts. At a women's ministry meeting, put the names into a container and draw out names until the container is empty. Every woman attending should have one to three names. For the next year, have the women make and keep in contact with these women, pray for them and send them cards on special holidays, in case of tragedy and just because.
