Amazon Parrot Types
Amazon parrots are frequently kept as pets, and those hoping to purchase such a bird may find it useful to know a little about the many different species that exist. The creatures are highly intelligent and have strong talking skills, which may be one of their main attractions for pet lovers.

Blue-Fronted Yellow-Shouldered Amazon Parrot

Blue-fronted yellow-shouldered Amazon parrots are also known as blue-fronted parrots. Their formal name is Amazona aestiva. These birds are normally recognizable by the small patch of blue feathers around the beak and the yellow color of their face. The rest of the body is green. The parrots usually measure around 14 inches long as an adult and are found in Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Northern Argentina. This bird is known to enjoy playing with toys.
Double Yellow-Headed Amazon Parrot

The double yellow-headed Amazon parrot, the scientific name for which is Amazona ochrocephala oratrix, has both a yellow head and a yellow neck. The rest of its body is normally green. The feathers at the bend of the wing are red. At around 16 inches long, this parrot is slightly larger than the blue-fronted yellow-shouldered Amazon Parrot. They can be found in the wild in Mexico.

Lilac-Crowned Amazon Parrot

The Lilac-crowned Amazon parrot is otherwise known as the Finsch's Amazon Parrot. It is mostly green, but its forehead is maroon, and the top of its head and neck is a bluish color. The bird, normally around 13 inches long, is quite small for parrots. It is considered to be a reasonably good talker, although its skills are not as strong as those of some other Amazon parrot species. The natural habitat of the lilac-crowned parrots is in Western Mexico.
Mealy Amazon Parrot

The scientific name for the mealy Amazon parrot is Amazona farinosa. This bird is large at around 15 inches or more and is recognizable by it's blue crown. The rest of its body is green, making it a slightly less colorful variety compared with other breeds. The parrot originates from thin areas of rain forest from Mexico to Bolivia and Brazil. It is known for its gentle disposition and is usually a talkative bird.

These include the green-cheeked Amazon, which is otherwise know as the red-crowned or Mexican red-headed Parrot; the orange-winged Amazon; the Panama yellow-fronted Amazon; the yellow-naped Amazon; the yellow-crowned, or yellow-headed Amazon; the white-fronted Amazon and the red-lored Amazon.
