Elementary Math Graphing Activities

Understanding and creating charts is imperative for students to succeed in later grades.

Graphing can be one of the most interesting topics in math class, as it is a way of escaping from boring numbers to create informative charts that are easy to understand, even for elementary school kids. Most children have seen such charts in the media, so it will be compelling to learn how to create them. As in every subject, the best way to introduce pupils to graphing is through fun activities, which will guide them throughout the process, from information-gathering to designing the actual graphic chart.

  1. Size of Classrooms

    • Ask pupils to find out about other grades' classroom size and help them create a bar graph, based on the information they acquire. The y-axis will contain the exact number of pupils and the x-axis will have each of the school's classrooms. A small group of two to five pupils will be responsible for each classroom, finding out the size of it, designing its bar on the graph and presenting it to the rest of the class.

    Pupils' Height

    • Measure every pupil's height in the classroom and create groups of similarly-sized children. Create together with your children a bar graph, with the groups on the x-axis and the number of pupils in each category on the y-axis. This will be an opportunity for children to learn about grouping data and creating corresponding graphs. It will be more rewarding for pupils, if you actively include them in every step of the procedure, from height measurement to graph designing.

    NBA Statistics

    • Ask pupils to find statistics about their favorite NBA franchise throughout the years and help them create a line graph about their performance throughout the years. The y-axis will contain their position in the regular season and the seasons will be on the x-axis. Try to cover a 10-year period and give children advice on how to find information on the Internet. It will be a fun activity, in a topic that appeals to many children.

    Survey Pie Chart

    • This is an activity for later grades of elementary school, as it needs a certain level of knowledge from pupils. Find a survey regarding a popular topic for children, such as the most popular video games or favorite kinds of pizza. Explain how to design the charts and how each value fits within the 360 degrees of the pie. Discuss the findings with the pupils and how a pie chart helps readers understand better the findings of a research.
