List of Law School Minority Grants & Fellowships

Members of minority groups pursuing a legal education may apply for various scholarships, grants and fellowships to help pay for law school. Both major and smaller law firms have established diversity scholarships to increase the number of minority lawyers in the profession. Most awards are based primarily on academic achievement, and may or may not take financial need into consideration.

  1. Foley and Lardner LLP Diversity Scholarship Program

    • Created in 1988, the diversity scholarship sponsored by this law firm with offices in the U.S. and internationally aims to "achieve a more inclusive legal community." Each year, a $5,000 award is granted to eligible students attending law school at Duke University, the University of California at Berkeley, UCLA, Northwestern, Georgetown and the universities of Florida and Wisconsin. Applicants must be African-American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American or Pacific Islander or consider themselves lesbian, gay, bi-sexual or transgendered. Scholarships are based on academic merit, not financial need.

    Miller Johnson West Michigan Diversity Law School Scholarship

    • This Grand Rapids, Michigan law firm established the Miller Johnson West Michigan Diversity Law School Scholarship for ethnic minorities residing in Michigan who attend or have been accepted at any accredited law school in the United States. Applicants should be African-American, Hispanic, Asian or Native American and demonstrate financial need. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Only U.S. citizens may apply.

    Adler Pollock and Sheehan Diversity Scholarship

    • The firm of Adler, Pollock and Sheehan PC has offices in Boston, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island. Its $10,000 diversity scholarship for first-year minority law students goes to a recipient demonstrating academic achievement with community service. While applicants may attend law school anywhere in the U.S., they must be Massachusetts or Rhode Island residents. African-American, Asian, Native American, Hispanic, gay or lesbian or other minority group members are eligible.

    Finnegan, Henderson Diversity Scholarship

    • Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP calls itself the "world's largest intellectual property firm," with offices in the U.S., Europe and Asia. It sponsors the Finnegan, Henderson, et al Diversity Scholarship for minority students planning to pursue a law career in intellectual property. In addition to the $15,000 scholarship, the recipient also joins Finnegan as a summer associate in a domestic office. Applicants must demonstrate exceptional academic ability, with preference going to those with undergraduate degrees in computer or life sciences or engineering or work experience in intellectual property.
