Wire Hanger Project Ideas
Many dry cleaners take your old wire hangers and reuse them, but if you are looking for a rainy day project, gather items from around your house to make a variety of crafts with your kids. These wire hanger projects are designed for all ages of children. Younger children may require more adult supervision. Wire hangers can be upcycled using fabric and ribbons, to hang posters or even turned into whimsical holiday decorations.

Upcycled Wire Hangers

Upcycle your wire hangers by wrapping them in fabric and ribbon. Use fabric and ribbon scraps to wrap wire hangers and give them a whole new life. Cut fabric into 1/2- to 1-inch strips. Hot glue one end of the fabric or ribbon to the hanger. It doesn't matter where. Begin wrapping the fabric and ribbon. Attach more pieces by gluing them to the hanger and continue wrapping until the hanger is covered. Make a set of six hangers as a personalized gift.

Have your kids make a collection of nature items. Give them a plastic baggie or paper lunch sack and go on a nature walk. Take items that have been collected and hot glue them to string or ribbon. Tie the other end of the string or ribbon to the hanger. Alternately, purchase foam balls from a craft store in varying sizes and paint them to resemble the planets. Hang them from a wire hanger for a solar system mobile.

Bend the wire into a diamond shape with the hook at the top. Cut one leg off of a pair of beige or brown nylon pantyhose. Start at the bottom and pull it over the hanger until it covers the entire diamond and the hook. Tie a knot at the top and cut off the excess. Glue two large googly eyes in the center of the diamond and a large red pom pom or foam ball at the bottom of the diamond for Rudolph's nose.
Poster Hangers
-
To avoid tape residue or other sticky residue on your walls, use wire hangers to hang up posters. This is great for teenagers who love to hang posters and change them out often. Attach posters to the hanger by punching two holes in the top about the same distance apart as the hanger is long. Use twist ties, ribbon or string to tie the poster to the hanger. Hang the hanger to the wall with thumb tacks or small hanging nails.
