Satellite Internet uses a dish, just like satellite TV.

Although cable and DSL Internet offer high-speed web browsing to many parts of the world, some areas are too rural and too sparsely populated for this type of technology to reach. In these areas, many are turning to satellite Internet. Satellite Internet links vary greatly according to the type of plan and the satellite link provider.

  1. Skycasters

    • For businesses and organizations that require multiple satellite Internet solutions, Skycasters offers satellite coverage for stationary and mobile computers. This company has several plans that range from download rates of 6.09 megabits per second maximum at the high end to 1.5 megabits per second on the lower end. Internet is delivered to stationary business computers through dishes ranging in size from 1 m to 1.8 m and to laptops on the go via portable satellite uplinks. Although these plans feature monthly rates and two-year standard contracts, satellites cost extra to purchase and install.

    HughesNet

    • HughesNet offers both business and home satellite plans that include both the satellite and the service in a monthly payment package. Like other satellite Internet providers, HughesNet plans are divided by the size of bandwidth. The "Basic" home plan provides the user with 1 megabit per second maximum speed and 200 kilobits per second upload speed while the more advanced "Power 200" plan allows the user to upload 300 kilobits per second while downloading 2 megabits per second. Additionally, HughesNet offers the user from five to 10 email accounts based on the type of plan selected. Unlike some other Internet providers, HughesNet includes a "Download Allowance." This allowance ranges from 200 megabits to 400 megabits per 24 hours and provides the company with the right to reduce the speed of your Internet connection after the allowance has been reached.

    WildBlue

    • WildBlue Satellite Internet is a home Internet service provider that features standard professional installation and a dedicated connection modem. This allows the user to download from 512 kilobits per second to 1.5 kilobits per second depending upon the chosen plan and gives the user five to 10 email addresses. Like HughesNet, WildBlue has a maximum data rate for each plan, marking the point where the service is allowed to reduce the quality of your connection.

    Requirements

    • Installing satellite Internet requires an unobstructed view of the sky and subscription to a service provider. Although satellite Internet can be delivered to homes in many areas, homes that have other options such as DSL or cable Internet service will often receive higher data speeds and experience fewer problems due to weather.
