Wendover, Utah, is on the border of Nevada. Directly across the Nevada state line is West Wendover, Nevada. The two cities are considered one large community with the majority of Wendover, Utah residents working in casinos in West Wendover, Nevada. Casinos are prohibited in Utah. Wendover, Utah has a small population, but fun kids' activities are easy to find.
Bonneville Salt Flats
The United States Department of the Interior, a division of the National Park Service, manages the Bonneville Salt Flats. The flats span 30,000 acres or 46 square miles. Located about 15 miles from Wendover, the Bonneville Salt Flats are a popular tourist attraction. The crust of the flats is made up of 90 percent salt and reaches more than 5 feet deep in some spots. People use the flats for land speed racing.
Events held at the Bonneville Salt Flats include the Hellfire Sport Rocketry Launch, Speed Week and BUB International Motorcycle Speed Trials. Many events are open to spectators.
Located on the border of Utah and Nevada is Blue Lake. Local organizations use the lake for scuba diving classes and certifications, but the area is open to the public. There are no bathroom facilities for visitors. Blue Lake is fed by warm water springs, so winter water temperatures rarely dip below 69 degrees F. During summer months, surface waters stay around 78 degrees F while deeper waters are warmer. Activities at Blue Lake include fishing, swimming and scuba diving. The lake is about 30 minutes from Wendover in Nevada.
Pilot Peak Wildlife Park
Just 10 miles to the west of West Wendover, Nevada, is the Pilot Peak Wildlife Park. The park is home to several local species including the Canadian lynx, Gordon cat and wallaroo. Kids can visit the Pilot Peak Ghost Town. Pilot Peak was established as a mining town and stopping point for people crossing the Bonneville Salt Flats on their way to California during the Gold Rush. Several of the original buildings are still standing. The Pilot Peak Ghost Town and Wildlife Park host several marathon events throughout the year.
Wings and Wheels Air and Car Show
The Wings and Wheels Annual Air and Car Show is held at the Historic Wendover Airfield in June. The airfield is home to the Enola Gay hangar. Guests are welcome to park in the hangar when visiting the airshow. Activities include a car show, air shows and aircraft on location for guests to view.
The Wings and Wheels Air and Car Show typically displays more than 200 cars that visitors can view and photograph.
