Haunted Houses Near the Chicago Planetarium
Chicago has been called one of the most haunted cities. The area has a violent past, with fire, shipwrecks and gangland murders. With such a history, often comes paranormal activity. There are many downtown locations that have personal accounts of paranormal activities. Most of these destinations are in the vicinity of the Chicago Adler Planetarium, located on Lake Shore Drive. Visitors to Chicago should be aware that while many of the haunted locations are well known to locals, most are private buildings and do not allow visitors on the premises.

Glessner House
-
Glessner House, located on South Prairie Avenue, is a haunted location just blocks from the Adler Planetarium. The large mansion is a design of Henry Hobson Richardson, who died right after the building was completed. The Glessner family put a picture of the architect in the house and it is still there today. Some say that Richardson's spirit is also there and has never left the home.
There are reports of a white ghost seen walking on the stairs and roaming around the master bedroom, while others feel a cold presence in the mansion. The home is now a museum and offers guided tours.
Red Lion Inn
-
The Red Lion Inn North Lincoln Avenue is another haunted downtown location that is in the vicinity of the planetarium. Seven past workers and patrons died in the pub, and now make their presence known to guests of the establishment.
People still report unexplained voices and screams, a washroom door that locks itself and a stained glass window that seems to make patrons feel dizzy. Employees report being tapped on the shoulder as they are working and some people are pushed by unseen hands.

Biograph Theater
-
Victory Gardens Biograph Theater, also on North Lincoln Avenue, is the location where John Dillinger was gunned down by FBI agents in 1934. The shootout happened in the alley next to the theater and some say that John Dillinger is still roaming about.
People report seeing a male ghost running down the alley and then disappearing. Some theater patrons also report feeling ill at ease when watching a show. Many believe John Dillinger is reliving the night of his death.
Harpo Studios
-
Harpo Studios, where the Oprah Winfrey show is taped, is just a few blocks away from the planetarium. The Washington Avenue location was used as a morgue for people who fell victim to the Eastland Ship Disaster in 1915. The ship capsized and over 800 people were killed. Workers refuse to stay in the building after the lights go out and there are reports of a gray-colored female ghost roaming around the studio.
