Skiing and snowboarding are popular activities in the area around Layton.

Layton, Utah, is a city of about 65,000 people on the Interstate 15 corridor just north of Salt Lake City. The city's location at the base of the Rocky Mountains gives visitors ample access to skiing, hiking, rock climbing and a host of other outdoor activities. In the city, you'll find many places to stay and a range of dining options, as well as museums and parks to enjoy.

  1. Places to Stay

    • With Interstate 15 cutting through the town, you'll find many chain hotels with the same basic amenities, including free breakfast. The Holiday Inn Express Layton and the Courtyard Marriott both offer swimming pools, fitness centers and spas. For a bit more of the local experience with a more personal touch, try the Alaskan Inn a few miles north of Layton in Ogden. The bed and breakfast offers private cabins and suites with king-sized beds and jetted tubs.

    Mountain Activities

    • During the winter, you can take advantage of numerous skiing and snowboarding opportunities. Located about 30 miles from Layton is the Wolf Creek ski resort, featuring ice fishing, sleigh rides, downhill and cross-country skiing.

      The Snowbird and Alta ski resorts are about an hour from the city; both feature a snow tube area and a full-service spa.

      During the summer, the areas near the ski resorts are ideal locations for hiking, mountain biking and picnicking.

    City Activities

    • You'll find many recreational opportunities within the Layton city limits. Check out one of the city's dozen parks, or rent a bike and cruise a paved trail, such as the 100-acre Kays Creek Parkway. Also worth a look is the Hill Aerospace Museum at Hill Air Force Base just north of Layton, and the Heritage Museum in downtown Layton. If you're into skateboarding or BMX riding, check out the skate/BMX park in the Layton Recreation Field.

    Where to Eat

    • Layton is home to a host of chain restaurants, including Applebee's, Famous Dave's, Cracker Barrel and Chili's. It's also offers a lot of Mexican food, including the Cafe Rio and many smaller establishments along the interstate corridor. For a bit of local flavor, try the burgers and cheese fries at The Training Table, the fresh brews at Roosters Brewing Company, and MacCool's Irish pub.
