CEMA Design Standards for Conveyors

The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) provides all of the standards for the various types of conveyor equipment used in manufacturing, shipping, and elsewhere. Because each company that produces conveyor equipment has its own designs and tooling, it's important that an organization such as CEMA provides standards for the industry so that various types of equipment can be compared and contrasted, as well as work together properly with other equipment that you may encounter in a field installation environment. The areas of conveyor equipment manufacturing that CEMA covers include safety and terminology.

  1. Conveyer Safety

    • CEMA produces safety videos and documentation on the proper and safe operation of conveyor equipment to ensure that workers who are using the equipment are using it to the proper level of safety. The standards include the type of different personal protective equipment, or PPE, that must be used when working with conveyors, as well as the design and spacing of actual bulk belt conveyor units within the manufacturing environments in which they are to be placed.

    Electrical and Pneumatic Terminology

    • In the interest of standardizing the language used in the installation, maintenance, and use of conveyor belts, CEMA also publishes an annual or semi annual list of electrical and pneumatic terminology that's used in the conveyor technology field. Similar to a Webster's Dictionary, the electrical and pneumatic terminology standards provide the go-to, accepted definitions and terms that are to be used when working with or referring to conveyor electrical requirements or pneumatic operations.

    Unit Handling or Package Handling

    • CEMA also has designed standards for unit handling and package handling conveyors, which are different from conveyors used in some manufacturing operations because packages must by necessity be able to pass through the system with a minimum of damage and may also be constantly added to or removed from the system by individuals who are operating in close proximity to the conveyor equipment, which can be dangerous.

    Bulk Belt Conveyor

    • Other specifications exist for bulk belt conveyors, which are belt-driven conveyor systems that move large amounts of material in bulk, either for sorting or processing by other machines or by individuals. Almost every type of conveyor equipment that can be imagined is covered by CEMA standards and specifications. In this way, the conveyor industry and the people that use the technology can be safe and efficient.
