Tips on Making Your Own Rub-On Transfers

Tips on Making Your Own Rub-On Transfers thumbnail
Design, style and especially color should be considered for your rub-on transfer.

Rub-on transfers are an interesting addition to your crafts. They are relatively easy to make. You must prepare and gather the items, make or choose a design, print it out and apply it to the desired surface. They do not take a lot of time, and the results are pleasing.

  1. Preparation

    • You need one copier transparency, hair spray gel, hair spray, a hair dryer, an inkjet printer and a spoon. Gather these items together before you begin. You also need to spray the hair gel on the transparency but only enough to cover the film completely without running. Dry it using the hair dryer for approximately 20 to 45 seconds.

    Making a Design

    • Before you can make a rub-on transfer, decide on a design. You can either design your own using computer software, or you can use an premade image, such as one you find on the Internet.

    Printing

    • When you have found and decided on an image, "flip" the image, and then print it onto the transfer paper. Before printing, change the resolution setting to "Best" and the paper setting to "Photo Gloss."

    Removing

    • Let the ink dry. You can use a hair dryer but on a low setting to avoid ruining the image. Then spray on a thin layer of hair spray and again use the hair dryer to let it set. When it is dry, place the paper face down onto the desired surface. Rub the back of the image with a spoon thoroughly and peel the paper away.
