Make a trinket box for the special child in your life.

Kids love to keep little things in their room, from jewelry to notes for girls to rocks and bugs for boys. Make or help them make a trinket box to store their precious items. They can be customized to fit their room decor or their personality. All the items necessary can be bought at the local craft store.

  1. Painted Wooden Trinket Box

    • Wooden or paper mache boxes can be found at most craft stores. They usually have square or circle boxes, but sometimes you can find them in other shapes, like hearts or stars. Some look like treasure chests with hinged lids. Paint it the color you desire; you can do a solid color or add decorative touches, such as stripes or polka dots. Allow it to dry. Do not close the lid while the paint is still wet, or the two pieces may stick together.

    Craft Stick Trinket Box

    • Build a trinket box out of craft sticks. Lay two parallel to each other on the table; put a dot of glue on each end of both sticks. Lay two more sticks in the opposite direction, on top of the dots of glue. You should now have a square made from four craft sticks. Continue building the craft stick box until it is the desired height. You can paint the craft sticks before you start to stack them if you wish.

    Floral Trinket Box

    • Purchase a box and artificial flowers at the craft store. Cut the stems off the flowers, so all you have are the petals. Paint the box your desired color and allow it to dry. Place a dab of hot glue in the center of the lid and press a large flower down on it. Continue adding glue and flowers to the lid of the box, moving out from the center. For a softer look to the box, wrap a ribbon around the sides of the box. Place glue in a few spots to keep the ribbon in place.

    Photo Collage Trinket Box

    • Purchase a box and decoupage glue from a craft store. Trim your own photos, or cut photos from a magazine. They should be small enough that you can put several on each side of the box. Spread the decoupage glue on the box with a foam paintbrush; it will feel extremely sticky. Lay the photos on the box, overlapping them if you wish. Put another coat of the glue on top of the photos. Allow it to dry completely before trying to close the lid, or it will stick. The decoupage glue acts as a sealant and makes the entire box glossy.
