Mavis Manor is a historical Victorian bed and breakfast in Flat Top, West Virginia.

Flat Top, West Virginia is a tiny hamlet located in the southern portion of the state. Visitors take trips here year-round to enjoy outdoor sports such as skiing in the winter and whitewater rafting in the summer. In Flat Top, there's only one boutique hotel---Mavis Manor. The manor is a bed and breakfast located in a historical Victorian mansion. It gives guests a unique experience while enjoying all of what southern West Virginia has to offer.

  1. Accommodations

    • There are three separate suites in Mavis Manor, in keeping with the European bed and breakfast theme. Two of the bedrooms have a toilet and sink, and all three suites share the main bathroom, which has a tub and shower. While not air conditioned, the windows are often open in the summertime. The Buchanan Suite has a queen bed and writing nook; the Traveler's Pad is ideal for a business traveler with a full bed, TV and DVD player; and Walden's Wildnerness Suite is a family-sized room with multiple beds, and a TV and DVD player.

    Amenities

    • While the Mavis Manor doesn't offer the traditional amenities of a chain hotel, it does offer guests unique things to do during their stay in Flat Top. For instance, it has a well-stocked farming pond for fishing. All guest rooms have puzzles in them. There also is a disc-golf course available for play, as well as 33 acres of countryside to explore. The hotel also has wireless Internet, and its cats roam the lobby to provide a little taste of home.

    History

    • Built in 1897, Mavis Manor was originally the home of Dr. Lonnie Lilly, who ran the town's medical practice. His wife designed the house to be a destination for his patients. Since the home had 12 rooms, 10 closets and seven fireplaces, it was big enough to keep overnight patients who traveled great distances to see Dr. Lilly. The right side of the home had a door specifically for patients visiting Dr. Lilly's office, and his office was equipped with a state-of-the-art trap door designed to keep medications cool.

    Area Activities

    • One of the closest attractions to the Mavis Manor is Winterplace, a ski resort that's just a three-minute drive away. There also are several parks in the area, including Camp Creek State Park, Bluestone, Little Beaver and Twin Falls. One of the most popular summer activities is whitewater rafting. The manor has a restaurant onsite that's famous for its blueberry pancakes. Other area restaurants include the Lakeview Restaurant and Brandon's BBQ.
