Searsport boasts many original colonial buildings.

Searsport is an historic town on the shore of Penonscot Bay, six miles north of Belfast on the Maine coast. Closely connected with sailing and shipbuilding throughout its history, the Searsport marina still offers visitors the chance to get out on the water. Nearby Sears Island, accessed by a causeway, offers a wealth of activities including hiking, bird watching and even clam digging, provided you have a temporary license.

  1. Yardarm Motel

    • The Yardarm is located on Route 1, one mile north of the center of Searsport. It is close to a number of restaurants as well as antique shops and the Penobscot Museum. The motel offers rooms in a variety of sizes to accommodate single travelers as well as families. All rooms have air conditioning and wireless Internet and there are two rooms where pets are allowed to stay. A complimentary buffet breakfast is served every morning that includes a variety of cereals, oatmeal, pastries and fruit juices. As of 2011, a double room costs from $60 a night and a family room, accommodating six people, starts at $90.

    Bait's Motel

    • Bait's is located one and a half miles from downtown Searsport. It is close to nearby Belfast, Bar Harbour and Camden, and just a few miles south of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, which boasts an observation tower. The family-run motel offers 14 rooms, either standard or deluxe. All rooms come with air conditioning and cable television and the deluxe rooms also include wireless Internet. There are also two suites to accommodate larger families. Angler's Restaurant is located next door and the hotel recommends it for its fresh Maine seafood including clams, lobster and oysters. A standard room costs from $79, as of 2011, and a deluxe room from $99.

    1794 Watchtide by the Sea

    • Overlooking Penobscot Bay, this 200-year-old colonial cape home is located one mile west of Searsport. Built by six colonial craftsmen in the late 1790s, it was once deeded to a certain Brigadier General Henry Knox who would later become the new nation's first Secretary of War. Watchtide offers five rooms, all with individual names such as Eleanor Roosevelt Room and Brigadier Room, and all with air conditioning and cable television. As of 2011, the cost of the rooms starts at $125. Breakfast at the Watchtide is made with local seafood and produce and example entrees include alpine French toast with cinnamon sauce and shrimp baked in sherry veloute sauce.

    Carriage House Inn

    • The Carriage House Inn was built in 1874 by Captain John McGilvery, a prominent shipbuilder, and was later occupied by the impressionist painter Waldo Peirce. In 1983, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places along with a number of other original buildings in Searsport. It has three rooms, all with queen-size beds and en-suite bathrooms. Guests also have use of the other rooms in the house including the den, where they can watch television or a film, and the library with its extensive collection of books. As of 2011, rooms are available from $110. The inn also offers special packages including the Romance Package for couples, complete with fresh flowers, chocolates and candles in the room.
