Nacogdoches is the oldest town in Texas.

Nacogdoches, Texas, with a population of roughly 30,000, has a wealth of tourist attractions beyond more popular sites such as the Caddo Mines and Stone Fort Museum. If you're interested in outdoor recreation, the city and its surrounding area has well over 20 parks and nature trails as well as a nearby ranch that offers horseback riding.

  1. Bird-Watching Areas

    • Nacogdoches has at least seven designated areas for bird-watching enthusiasts, or birders. Three different places are in the city proper: Pecan Park, Lanana Creek Trail and the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center. Some of the birds you can view at these places are Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Migrant Warblers and Great Blue Herons. For those who are interested in songbirds, March through May is the best time to visit. Four different bird-watching areas are outside the city, including the SFA Experimental Forest.

    SFASU Planetarium

    • This planetarium is located on the first floor of the Math-Nursing Building on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University and features a Spitz 512 star projector beneath a 30-foot dome. SFA Planetarium opened in 1983 and since then has been providing educational presentations on black holes, oceans in space, and the planets of the solar system. Admission is $2 per person and that includes school groups.

    Zion Hill Baptist Church

    • This church is the oldest extant black church in Nacogdoches. The first congregation gathered there in 1879 under the direction of the Reverend Lawson Reed. The church contains a mixture of Gothic and Victorian elements in its design. Some distinct features include the pointed-arch windows of the steeple tower and the scrollwork in the porch gables. The church is located at 324 N. Lanana Street.

    Roselake Ranch

    • At Roselake Ranch, visitors can rent a horse and embark on a guided ride through the nearby forest. Both group and individual rates are available. The cost for a guided ride is $20 per person, but for groups of five or more, the cost is just $15 apiece. Parties that include games and pony rides for children are also available and cost $150 for a two-hour slot.
