Inexpensive Healthy Foods for a Party

Party hosts can avoid ruining their budgets and diets by providing inexpensive healthy party foods. Avoid the post-party stomachache caused by eating too many rich and fatty foods by choosing snacks that are healthy and low-fat. In addition, save your budget by purchasing inexpensive ingredients for the party foods and making them yourself instead of purchasing pre-made snacks. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Pizza Bites

    • Homemade low-fat pizza bites look and taste delicious without the expense and greasiness of most pizzas. Make yeast dough and roll it into thin crusts on cookie sheets. Brush the pizza with olive oil or pesto sauce and sprinkle a very light layer of low-fat mozzarella cheese. Top it with flavorful vegetables, including canned artichoke hearts, thinly sliced onions, canned or fresh mushroom slices, olives and red peppers. Bake the pizza at 400 degrees Fahrenheit until the cheese and crust begin to brown. Cut it into 2-inch squares to limit the serving size.

    Roasted Vegetables

    • Vegetable platters at a party often consist of sticks of celery and chunks of cauliflower that nobody really wants to eat. In addition, the salad dressing or dipping sauce for a raw vegetable tray is typically not very healthy. Instead, serve a variety of roasted vegetables, which are more flavorful and sweeter than their raw counterparts. Spread chunks of carrots, broccoli, onions, potatoes, squash and bell peppers on a baking sheet, drizzle them with olive oil and sprinkle salt, pepper and fresh chopped rosemary over the vegetables. Roast the vegetables at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 50 minutes, turning the vegetables halfway through the cooking time.

    White Bean Dip

    • Rather than making a dip with sour cream, yogurt or cream cheese as its base, use white beans. Canned white beans are far less expensive than dairy ingredients and also contain more protein and less fat. Make your own dip by pureeing white beans, also known as cannellini beans, with garlic, olive oil, mint and thyme to taste. Toss some chopped chives on top of the final produce for visual interest and serve the dip with bread rounds, tortilla chips, pita chips or anything similar that is on sale.

    Angel Food Cake

    • Although it is sweet, angel food cake does not require any oil or butter, making it a healthier dessert than most. Save money by baking your own angel food cake rather than buying one at the store. Although you can serve angel food cake with fresh berries, these can be expensive, depending on the season. When berries are not in season, flavor the angel food cake with coffee to make it seem like a more complete dessert.
