Activities for a 4-Year-Old Kid's Birthday
So you have sent the invitations, arranged an appropriate venue and planned the food -- all that's left to do is organize fun activities for your 4-year old's party. Young children have lots of energy to burn and tend to get bored quickly, so the party should be action-packed with lots of fun, short games. It is useful to write down a brief running order ahead of the party, so that if things get a little hectic you can refer to your list of activities. Does this Spark an idea?

Fancy Dress Parade
-
Young children love to play dress up. Invite children to attend the party in fancy dress or to bring it with them. Fancy dress does not need to be expensive and could be as basic as a striped t-shirt and eye patch for a pirate costume. Play some music and get the children to follow an adult around the room to show off their costumes. It does not need to be a competition with a winner but can be turned into a fun game. The children should do things that reflect their costumes such as meowing for a cat or pretending to fly as a superhero.
Musical Party Games
-
No party would be complete without a series of musical games that allow children to dance and use up all that extra energy. Play musical statues, where children dance and freeze when the music stops. Alternatively, play songs that have a simple dance routine or a series of actions such as "head, shoulders, knees and toes". Young children do not want to play games with complicated rules, as they are too young to understand them, so keep it simple.
-
Entertainer
-
To take off a little pressure, hire a professional entertainer to keep the kids entertained for half of the party and give the adults a chance to sit down. A clown or magician is a good option, as she can put on a show suitable for a demanding preschool audience. Many entertainers will also bring prizes or small items to give away to the children, which is sure to put a smile on their faces.
Backup Plan
-
Have a small list of alternative activities you can do if the children start to get restless. Often there are one or two children who do not like the musical games, which can get manic. Have a supply of pictures and crayons that children can color in to keep everyone included. A small supply of toys will also come in handy for any children that do not want to join in the games. Young children like to be entertained constantly, so have one of the moms paint the children's faces after they have finished eating their party food.
