Scholarships for single black women are available to enable them to attend college. If you are a single African-American woman, and are interested in attending college but unable to afford tuition, you can find reassurance in the fact that there are funds earmarked especially for you.

  1. Dr. Arnita Young Boswell Scholarship

    • The Dr. Arnita Young Boswell Scholarship is awarded to African-American women who wish to attend college. Named for a founding member of the organization which awards the scholarship, the Dr. Arnita Young Boswell Scholarship is given to ten women in amounts ranging from $500 to $1,000, and can be renewed annually. Candidates are women who are passionate about social commitment, education and the general well-being of the African-American community. Interested applicants should apply directly to the National Hook-Up of Black Women.

    Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund

    • The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund is one of a number of scholarships granted to residents of a particular state; in this case, Arkansas residents only are eligible for this scholarship. Scholarships are given annually to single parents residing in Arkansas who are considered to be economically disadvantaged. Because guidelines, requirements, academic standing and other factors vary from county to county, interested applicants should contact their county for scholarship information specific to their area.

    Essence Scholars Program for African-American Students

    • Black female students interested in earning a college degree may be eligible for the Essence Scholars Program. The award is given to five African-American women who are currently sophomores or juniors, in varying amounts up to $10,000. Candidates must have a 3.0 GPA or higher, demonstrate financial need and be a part of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). Interested applicants should apply directly to the United Negro College Fund.

    Project Working Mom Scholarship

    • Single parents who are attempting to return to school may qualify for the Project Working Mom scholarship. Still in its first three years of existence, Project Working Mom, in collaboration with eLearners.com, provides support in the way of financial aid for single parents who have the desire to go to college, but may not possess the time, money and/or confidence to do so. Scholarships may be used only at participating online colleges. Interested applicants must write an essay, and should apply directly to Project Working Mom.
