Gifts for Bereaved Parents
The death of a child is an unimaginable loss. Parents left behind appreciate thoughts and sympathies, but passing those along can often feel awkward. Typical gifts of flowers, cards and gift baskets are thoughtful; however, there are other creative ways to show your sympathy that will be very meaningful to bereaved parents.

Meals
-
Bereaved parents in the midst of grieving may not have the desire to cook for themselves. Taking a meal to their home is a thoughtful gesture. Call before taking over a meal to set up a time for drop-off. Ask about any allergies or food preferences. Take meals that require little effort, like casseroles or salads. Include a main dish, a starch and a vegetable. Drinks and desserts are nice as well. Clearly write out baking or assembly instructions. If possible, use disposable baking dishes and zip top bags to aid in cleanup and eliminate the need for them to return a dish. If you do not have time to cook a meal, ordering something to be delivered is another thoughtful option.
Donations
-
A donation made in memory of the child is meaningful. If the child died from a disease, consider making a donation to an organization striving to eliminate this disease. Simply make your donation and send a card to the parents indicating what you did. Oftentimes, organizations can provide cards for this purpose.

Memorial Tree
-
Purchasing or planting a sapling tree to memorialize the child is a gift that will last a lifetime. Choose a variety of tree that is meaningful to the parents. Ask the parents whether you can have the tree planted for them and whether the would like it on their property, at the gravesite or in a local park or schoolyard. You can also create a remembrance garden if you have enough space.
Scrapbook
-
If you knew the child well or had a special connection, creating a scrapbook is be a thoughtful gift. This is particularly true if you have photographs or memories of the child the parents may not know about. Add as many pictures or mementos as you can, and include notes or a narrative that will help the parents remember the child.
