Types of Gang Intervention Units thumbnail
Gang intervention units help to lower crime and decrease gang initiations.

States and countries set up gang intervention units in various cities around the world to help prevent additional gang violence, and also to help intervene with gangs already established and committing crimes. Techniques for gang interventions vary with the unit handling the case, but most often, they all have the same goal---to stop gang violence.

  1. Benefits

    • Gang intervention units often utilize their members' skills in various ways to infiltrate gang territory and decrease gang violence in a variety of ways. Gang intervention units help to lower street gang violence and rid drugs from neighborhoods and cities across the world by arresting leaders of gangs and other gang members.

    Strategies and Tactics

    • Gang intervention units have specialized groups and members, each in charge of different tasks when intervening with gangs. Some members of the units work with and collect information from gang members to help bring down other violent criminals and the most wanted gang members. Other members within the gang intervention units help by working with people in the community and local shops for information and details on gang hideouts and actions. Some gang intervention units also use homicide teams when dealing with gang-related incidents that specialize in gang crimes for better results.

    Prevention

    • Many gang intervention units strive to remove violent criminals from the street, but they also want to prevent young people from joining or forming street gangs as well. Gang intervention units have community projects such as classes to inform and educate the youth of the dangers in joining and becoming a part of a gang. They also have groups within the unit who infiltrate gangs to find information on initiations and locations to help prevent and stop them.

    Location

    • Gang intervention units are located throughout the country and vary in the number of teams in each state. Call your nearest police department to inquire about the intervention units in your local area. Additionally, official city and state websites may list this information as well.
