Barrel racing on horseback is one type of racing that can be found in Idaho.

Whether you enjoy watching cars, motorcycles or horses race, if you are a resident of Idaho you have a number of options. There are races taking place all around the state in several different categories, and there are racing associations that organize and host events year-round. Learning about the different racing associations in the Gem State will allow you to track down the venues and contact information so you can observe or take part in races in your area.

  1. Western Idaho Racing Association

    • Since 1970, race enthusiasts in Western Idaho have had a regional racing association to turn to for all of their local stock car racing needs. The Western Idaho Racing Association, was founded in November,1970 to help improve the quality of stock car racing at Meridian Speedway. Since then, drivers and fans have enjoyed competition in many different racing classes such as winged sprint cars, modified racers, street stock and many more.

Drivers compete for cash and prizes in WIRA races which offers a championship prize called the "Pot of Gold" to the winners in each division. The organization has set a goal of awarding $10,000 to the top drivers in coming years.

    Silver Creek Racing Association

    • From December until February, the Silver Creek Racing Association stages chariot horse races locally as an alternative to traveling to Jerome, Idaho---the next nearest chariot racing venue. The association was established in 1975 and is still growing. The Silver Creek Racing Association is also the only Idaho chariot racing organization that includes a division for racing miniature horse teams.

The Silver Creek racing season is a three-month warm up for the state championships. Winners of the association competitions move on to state competition with a chance to make the cut for world chariot racing championships later in the spring.

    Southwestern Idaho Desert Racing Association,

    • The Southwestern Idaho Desert Racing Association, or SIDRA, organizes motorcycle races across the deserts of the southern part of the state. Motocross enthusiasts line up at a starting line on rugged desert trails and power through the sand and rough terrain in hopes of reaching the finish line first. These endurance races often require pit refueling and even a portable source of drinking water. Racing in the desert is not for the timid, but it is an obsession for many motocross fans and riders. The SIDRA racing season begins in January and runs until early November.

    North West Barrel Racing Association

    • If you like racing in a rodeo atmosphere, North West Barrel Racing Association has what you are looking for. Although it is based in South Dakota, the NWBRA is the sanctioning body for many rodeo barrel-racing events held in Idaho and several other states.

The NWBRA is a non-profit organization that allows racers to form and control their own organizations locally. It is designed to promote barrel racing as a family activity for all ages and levels of ability. The organization hopes to add a national finals event so all members organizations can compete for cash and prizes.
