Howard Hughes Medical Institute Grants
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) supports biomedical research, including veterinary science as well as human medical and dental science, and the development of new teaching methods. HHMI awards grants to both individual researchers and institutions like universities, research centers and museums. The foundation puts out calls for proposals for specific types of projects it wishes to fund, and normally does not accept unsolicited proposals, according to its website.

Medical Research Fellows
-
Individual awards often take the form of fellowships. In the Medical Research Fellows Program, researchers receive a stipend of $28,000 along with additional support for health coverage, books, travel and moving expenses for a period of one year. Individual researchers should be enrolled in a program of medical study, which can include veterinary or dental study in the U.S. They may conduct research anywhere in the U.S. aside from the National Institutes of Health. Students may apply for this fellowship without invitation.
Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study
-
The Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study award $46,500 per year for a period of up to five years to support research toward a Ph.D. HHMI awards these fellowships to students from demographic groups underrepresented in the field and to economically disadvantaged students, according to the website. Students may apply without invitation.

International Student Research Fellowships
-
This program supports non-U. S. citizens studying medicine in a U. S. institution. Applicants must be in their third or fourth year of study. Their institution must nominate them for the award, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute must then invite them to apply. The award provides up to $30,000, typically for a period of three years, and HHMI makes a number of these awards per year (up to 40 for 2011 to 2012).
Research Scholars
-
This program typically supports medical students for one year of study at the National Institutes of Health, although some have extended the appointment. Students receive $28,000 per year for living expenses and they receive furnished housing in an on-campus apartment, as well as additional support for moving expenses, travel and books.
HHMI Professors
-
This grant funds development of new teaching strategies that help undergraduates to become more interested in scientific research. The program aims to more closely connect pioneering researchers with undergraduates. Professors must be invited to apply.
Precollege Outreach Initiative
-
This program supports medical schools, hospitals, research centers and other institutions of higher learning in sharing their knowledge with pre-K through grade 12 classrooms. They must receive an invitation to apply.
Med into Grad Initiative
-
This program provides up to $700,000 per school over a four-year period for the improvement of biomedical Ph.D. courses. It aims to strengthen students' understanding of clinical practices.
Initiative for Colleges and Universities
-
HHMI also has an Initiative for Colleges and an Initiative for Universities, which help higher level biomedical institutions to share their knowledge with primary, secondary and undergraduate schools. The Initiative for Colleges takes place every four years, and schools must receive an invitation to apply for either award.
