Trade colleges are excellent choices for those who want to spend less time in school and start earning a decent wage as soon as possible. Los Angeles Community Colleges

The Los Angeles Community College District is home to nine different colleges, many of which offer trade and technical courses. One of those colleges is focused primarily on trades. The Los Angeles Trade-Tech community college has trade programs available in disciplines ranging from design to construction. They also have courses in trades such as culinary arts, as well as a transportation technology program that has specializations for motorcycle, heavy diesel and automotive repair.
Walter Jay Institute

The Walter Jay institute was founded in 1994. Located on Wilshire Boulevard, the school began as an establishment solely dedicated to training new medical assistants. As time went on, they expanded, incorporating several new programs into their school. In addition to the ongoing medical assistant program, there are now massage therapy, English as a Second Language, vocational nursing and computerized office management programs.

Trades that require a journeyman certificate require a combination of an on-the-job apprenticeship and training with formal education. If you are in the Los Angeles area and interested in working as en electrician professionally, the Electrical Training Institute can provide you with the classes that you need to move from apprentice to journeyman status. The school works together with the National Electrical Contractors Association and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers to ensure a high level of education for all types of electrical workers.

Pasadena City College offers a wide variety of trade programs that offer a number of different career paths. For instance, they offer certificate vocational programs in disciplines like accounting and business, but also have a number of specialized programs -- like automotive repair and welding -- available. You can also study construction inspection or theater technology. Pasadena City College also has degree courses in addition to their career certificate programs.
