Texas Electrician License Requirements
Texas electrician license requirements are governed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. All persons performing electrical work in Texas must be licensed in their specific discipline; electricians may have more than one license. To run an electrical contracting business, the owner or a key employee must possess a master electrician license and oversee the work of other electricians employed by the company. The business itself must apply for an electrical contractor license.
-
Master Electrician License
-
To qualify for a master electrician or master sign electrician license, you must have an active journeyman electrician license for at least two years, complete a minimum of 12,000 hours of actual job training supervised by a master electrician, and pass a state-approved master electrician or master sign electrician exam.
Journeyman Electrician License
-
To obtain a journeyman electrician or journeyman sign electrician license, you need to complete a minimum of 8,000 hours of actual job training supervised by a master electrician. You're also required to pass a state-approved journeyman electrician or journeyman sign electrician test.
-
Electrical Apprentice License
-
New electricians need an electrical apprentice or electrical sign apprentice license. To get an electrical apprentice license, you must be at least 16 years of age and actively assist in electrical work under the direction of a master electrician. Electrical sign apprentices have the same work requirement but must be at least 18 years of age.
Residential Appliance or Wireman License
-
Residential appliance installers and residential wiremen must also be licensed in Texas. For the appliance installer license, you need to pass a state-approved residential appliance installer test and be at least 16 years of age. For wiremen, 4,000 hours of job training under a master electrician and a passing grade on the wireman's exam is required.
Maintenance Electrician License
-
To obtain a maintenance electrician license, requirements include 8,000 hours of job training under a master electrician or maintenance electrician and passing a state-approved maintenance electrician exam.
Electrical Contractor Licenses
-
There are three main electrical contractor licenses in Texas. Electrical contractor, electrical sign contractor and residential appliance installation contractor licenses all have similar requirements. The owner must possess --- or employ someone who does --- the highest level of license for his electrical specialty, have state minimum requirements of liability insurance and meet state requirements for Texas workers' compensation insurance. There are other business requirements to legally operate an electrical contracting business, but licensing is the first step in the process.
