Decimals
-
A decimal is defined as a proper fraction whose denominator is a power of 10. A decimal is a real number in between two whole numbers. For example, 11.45 is a decimal and is a number in between 11 and 12.
Fractions
-
A fraction is a part of a whole. It is considered an expression that shows the quotient of two quantities. For example, 1/3 is a fraction and represents one third of a whole.

Place Value
-
Place value refers to the position of a particular number within a fraction. Use the number 15.236 as an example. The number 2 is part of the "tenths" place value because it is located directly after the decimal point. The number 3 is part of the "hundreths" place value because it is second from the decimal point. The number 6 is part of the "thousandths" place value because it is third from the decimal point.
Rounding
-
The term "rounding" refers to the moving up or down of a decimal from one number to another when it is somewhere in between. The general rule is that any number that has a 0 - 4 in the tenths place value should be rounded down to the next whole number. Any number that has a 5 - 9 in the tenths place should be rounded up. For example, 14.3 should be rounded down to 14, while 14.67 should be rounded up to 15.
