Grandparents' Day is also celebrated in the UK.

National Grandparents' Day was proclaimed in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter. This was done at the instigation of a housewife from West Virginia, Marian McQuade. The goal of National Grandparents' Day is to honor grandparents and family and help children learn the strength, information and guidance elderly people can offer. The holiday also allots grandparents the opportunity to show love and affection for their family, especially their grandchildren. Preschool children will enjoy creating gifts to give their grandparents to commemorate the day.

  1. "Designer" Handkerchief

    • This activity will require a lot of help from the teacher. The preschool students can use wax crayons to make designs on a plain handkerchief. They should draw something that relates to their grandparents. Now the teachers help the student by placing the handkerchief in between the two damp cloths and iron the handkerchief using a warm but not too hot iron. The wax crayon will slowly melt, dyeing beautiful designs on the handkerchief.

    Photo Frames

    • These picture frames can easily be made by preschool children using Popsicle sticks and cardboard. With the help of teachers, the students can glue together the Popsicle sticks to create a rectangular frames. The teacher can take and print a picture of the student to use for the frame. Use cardboard to back the frame. The students can then color and decorate the frame. Students can write phrases such as, "I Love you Grandma and Grandpa!"

    Hug Coupons

    • This gift is the easiest to make. Preschool students, with the help of the teachers, can decorate "hug coupons" for their grandparents. Students can make different coupons if they wish, such as "free trip to the park." Students and/or teachers design the coupons however they choose.

    Family Tree

    • It is always nice for grandparents to see the extent of their family. For this reason, a good gift for grandparents is the creation of a family tree drawing. Have the preschool students paint a tree on a paper with brown paint. Then students can cut out lots of leaves from green paper. Students can draw a different family member on each leaf and glue the leaves to the tree.
