Getting a foot in the door at the companies is no easy task, but scoring a summer internships provides valuable networking opportunities while also supplying a summer's worth of hands-on experience.

PricewaterhouseCoopers breaks the curriculum of its summer internship down into five categories of experience: training, client experiences, coaching and development, shadowing experiences, and community service. Spending a summer working through each category with hands-on experience, interns get a well-rounded perspective of corporate life at PwC. Interns even have personal coaches to help develop the skill set necessary to excel in the accounting world.
Deloitte

Deloitte offers students eight to ten week internships every summer. Many specialities within the accounting industry are catered to, as interns get the chance to work at Deloitte's consulting, financial advisory, and tax divisions. All interns are assigned a "buddy" for the duration of the summer to help them get acclimated to the organization. Deloitte's offerings led to them being named the number one place to land an internship by BusinessWeek in 2009.

Ernst & Young connects its summer interns with both large multi-national corporation and start-up endeavors to give a well-rounded view of the accounting industry and life at the company. The company stresses that interns not only gain experience with the ins and outs of accounting, but also the skills that help accountants succeed such as writing and presentation delivery. Every year, Ernst & Young brings its interns to the International Intern Leadership Conference to further their networking and learning experience.
KPMG

KPMG's "Build Your Internship Program" lets interns specialize in two of the company's practices (choosing from audit, tax, and advisory). One practice is selected as the "Core practice" and the other is designated the "Developmental practice." KPMG believes this lets interns get a well-rounded skill set and be more familiar with the industry they are looking to enter. Plus, interns are given a laptop to use and take home after the conclusion of the internship.
