Grants for Public School Library Security Systems
Appropriate security is a key concern to all libraries. It helps protect the library's resources such as books and magazines, as well as archival material and technology equipment. There are some inexpensive steps a library can take to improve security such as installing deadbolt locks. Taking the step to install a security system, though worthwhile, can prove quite costly. There are several grant opportunities available to public school libraries to help defray the costs.

U.S. Department of Education
-
The U.S. Department of Education offers the Safe and Supportive School Grant which can help a school library finance a security system. It is managed by the Department's Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools. The purpose of the grant is to establish safe and drug-free learning environments so as to promote scholarly excellence. In 2010, $38.8 million dollars went to 11 states. Details of grant eligibility and how to apply can be found on the Department of Education's website.
Community Oriented Policing Services
-
The Secure Our Schools Program Award sponsored by the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) is another financial resource for the school library. COPS is a division of the United States Department of Justice. This grant provides financial assistance to state, local or tribal governments for the purchase of safety equipment in schools. The money can be used for equipment such as security alarm systems and locks as well as the security assessments and training. Recipients of the award are required to provide a 50 percent local cash match towards the cost of the approved project.

Philanthropic Foundations
-
There are numerous private philanthropic foundations that can help provide financial assistance to school libraries. Many of theses organizations do not have specific security grants, but evaluate needs on a case-by-case basis. For example, the Cabot Family Charitable Trust provides grants for general and specific program support as well as for capital campaigns for non-profit organizations in Boston, Massachusetts and communities neighboring Boston. Another resource available to schools in Massachusetts is the Copeland Foundation. On May 19, 2010, the Foundation awarded $25,000 for a camera and security system at the public high school in Milton, Massachusetts.
Private Companies
-
Private local and national companies are also a good resource for public school libraries looking to secure security funding. For example, Barnes & Noble Community Relations Program supports pre-K-12 schools, as well as other non-profit organizations. They offer a limited amount of donations and give in those communities where they have a presence. They also provide fundraising activities such as holiday gift wrapping. If your school is interested in this sponsorship, contact your local store manager or the community relations manager for your area.
