Model Airplane Clubs in Michigan

Model Airplane Clubs in Michigan thumbnail
Model airplanes range from simple to elaborate and expensive.

In the world of radio-controlled model airplanes, there are two main elements: flying them and building them. Many beginners start off buying a ready-to-fly (RTF) plane to get straight to learning the controls and the fun of flying. Devotees of this hobby spend great amounts of time building the perfect model plane before flying it. In Michigan, clubs exist throughout the state that are dedicated to bringing together people who enjoy this pastime.

  1. Cloudbusters

    • Cloudbusters Model Airplane Club makes its home in southeast Michigan. The club holds meetings on the third Tuesday of the month in a town called Ferndale, a suburb just north of Detroit. Members fly indoor, control line and free-fly planes in several different locations throughout the area. The fee for membership to this club is $15 per year, as of 2011, and this covers a subscription to the newsletter. Besides getting together to fly planes, the Cloudbusters involve themselves in community projects such as organizing and coaching "Wright Stuff" aviation events at the Science Olympiad science competition held at in Macomb, Michigan.

    Fly'n Wolverines

    • The Fly'n Wolverines is another southeastern Michigan club dedicated to the building and flying of radio-controlled model airplanes. The club has its own home field which is located just north of the town of Algonac, near Lake St. Clair, about an hour northeast of Detroit. In addition to this field, the Wolverines fly at different events throughout the area. The club is only open to members with a card from the Academy of Model Aeronautics, as the Wolverines hold a charter from the AMA. The Wolverines meet at their field during the "flying months" of June through August. The other months they meet at the public library in Mount Clemens.

    Kent Radio Aero Modelers

    • The Kent Radio Aero Modelers (KRAM) is based on the western side of Michigan. The group and its over 100 members all belong to the AMA. The club has its own home field near Alto, which is about 25 minutes from Grand Rapids. The field is open year-round and features a fabric runway, for the safety of the planes. KRAM meets on the first Tuesday of each month, but gets together regularly for flying events and building sessions. On Tuesday evenings during summer, several veteran club members offer flying instructions at the field. Dues rates for new members vary depending on level of membership approved by group members.

    Traverse Area Model Pilot Society

    • The Traverse Area Model Pilot Society (TRAMPS) is a model airplane group based in Traverse City, Michigan, in the northwest tip of the state's lower peninsula. The club has been AMA chartered since 1936. The club flies from two fields: Rennie Field is about six miles south of Traverse City, and Interlochen field is about 10 minutes away from there and is a wide-open field sitting at the south end of Green Lake Airport. The club holds monthly meetings in addition to regular flying and building events. Membership dues for the club are $65 to join and $55 for annual dues after that, as of 2011.
