You can do your part to conserve water by making small changes in your daily routine.

Conserving water not only protects the Earth and its supply of fresh water, it can also help you save on your water bill each month. There are various things you can do around the house on a daily basis to reduce your bill, and do your part to save on resources without making any large changes.

  1. Showering

    • Take shorter showers to reduce your water consumption. You can also install a shower head that is designed for a slower flow. They cost less than $10 and are simple to install in minutes. Don't leave the water running while you undress or complete other tasks in the bathroom.

    Brushing Teeth

    • Turn the water off while you brush your teeth. Turn it on to fill your cup to rinse your mouth and to wet your toothbrush. Since the average faucet flows at a speed of 2 gallons per minute according to the Environmental Protection Agency. If everyone in the house does this, your savings will add up.

    Watering Your Yard

    • If you must water your lawn, do it in the morning when water evaporation isn't as high. Do it for a shorter time period, and watch the forecast for chances of rain. If it is going to rain, wait a day and see if you can avoid wasting more water.

    Car Wash

    • It may be hard to believe, but using a professional car wash is better than leaving your hose running while you wash. The water also drains into a sewer, which prevents the soap from running into your driveway and lawn. Alternatively, fill a bucket up with the soapy water and use that exclusively to wash. Only use the hose for a quick rinse.

    Leaks

    • Don't let leaks go unnoticed. A faucet that continuously drips has the potential to waste 3 gallons per day. Be sure to fix any small leaks, and always turn the water off completely.
