Windows Live Cannot Detect When Computer Is Turned Off or Has Security Problem

Windows Live is bundled software included with newer versions of the Windows operating system such as Vista and Windows 7. Windows Live includes messenger, email and photo software. If you have network problems such as not being able to connect to a server that is powered off or security issues, you can troubleshoot and enable software for network connections and security.

  1. Wake On LAN

    • "Wake on LAN" is a type of setting that brings a computer out of sleep mode when network activity is detected. Set your network card configurations to "wake on LAN." This setting is also available in the "Power" setting in the Windows control panel. This means that when Windows Live makes a connection to a computer that is off, the computer powers on from the network activity.

    Windows Firewall

    • Windows Firewall is included with each version of the Windows operating system including Vista and Windows 7. The firewall settings are available from the Windows system tray and in the security section of the control panel. This adds security for your Windows Live software when connecting to the Internet such as with the messenger service.

    Anti-Virus

    • Windows also has anti-virus software included with the operating system. The anti-virus has automatic updates, so your computer has the latest protection when you open Windows Live email or download a photo from family or friends. This software is also available in the control panel settings, so you can make sure it is active and turned on.

    Parental Controls

    • Windows Live works with Windows parental controls, which are implemented with Windows 7. Parents can control the people and times when kids can use the messenger service, browse the Internet and send and receive email. The parental controls are also in the security settings in the control panel.
