Tips for Hunting Elk in Oregon in the Fall
Hunting for elk is a common pastime in Oregon. Different conditions apply to the four hunting areas in Oregon, and different types of elk can be hunted throughout the fall. Safety precautions, legal obligations and area scouting should all be taken care of before you head out on the hunt.

Best Times to Hunt
-
During the fall, Cascade elk come out earlier, usually around mid-October. The first season for hunting Rocky Mountain Elk starts near the end of October and the second season begins in early November. The first Coast elk season starts shortly afterward in mid-November, while the second Coast elk season begins close to Thanksgiving.
Best Areas for Finding Elk
-
In general, it's better to move away from your vehicle and the roads. Scout around before your anticipated season to find where elk are migrating. Select a few good spots before hunting season begins.

Safety Tips
-
Wear orange at all times while hunting so other hunters will recognize you. Check the weather for each area you will be hunting in -- northwest, northeast, high desert or southwest. Look at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's website regularly for closures in specific areas or changes in regulations.
Legal Guidelines
-
Purchase the appropriate tag for the type of elk you plan to hunt. Deadlines are listed on the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's website. If you miss the deadline, you can contact Oregon's Licensing Services in Salem at 503-947-6100, or a field office that sells licenses, but some additional regulations apply.
