Being on-call is important for the successful virtual assistant.

Starting a virtual assistant business is a good way to work with people and be able to stay home at the same time. It can be an easy business to start. The start-up costs are relatively low and the potential for profit is high. If you already have significant knowledge in business and basic computer and Internet skills, along with some basic home office equipment, you can become a virtual assistant almost overnight.

  1. Office Equipment

    • Most virtual assistants work from their home offices and either do general work or specialize in a variety of fields like marketing, graphic design, computer support or translation work. The equipment required isn't much different than that of someone who works in an office. A computer with high-speed Internet access, a cell phone, a fax machine and scanner and the ability to email and instant message clients is essential. How you set up your office or work area is entirely up to you. Since you are working virtually, no one will ever need to come to your office and see you work--eliminating the need for client space or even a desk, if you so choose.

    Marketing Plan

    • To become a virtual assistant you'll want to research other virtual assistant services and find out what types of services they offer. Make a list of the kinds of services you could offer and do a market analysis. Finding out where your clients are and determining the best way to reach them is an important step to take before you start to market to them. You can design a website and blog and use them to attract clients. You can also develop your social media profiles and start networking with your potential clients both online and off. Start marketing locally by joining the chamber of commerce and offering classes or a workshop on virtual assistants and what they can do. Write articles, blog posts and sales letters explaining what a virtual assistant is and how to make use of one.

    Personal Skills

    • A virtual assistant needs to be energetic, focused and able to have multiple projects going at one time. Because you are assisting someone else, you have to be accommodating to their schedule. Although you may be your own boss, you don't always call the shots in regards to time and hours worked. Discipline is particularly important since you will often have to dedicate yourself wholly to your new business, especially in the beginning. A virtual assistant often becomes more than just an at-home secretary, helping businesses form their vision. The ability to create and cultivate a relationship with the business owners you work with is essential to your overall career.

    Business Skills

    • Typing and proofreading skills are essential to any virtual assistant. Many virtual assistants are hired to help companies communicate, whether by letter, blog, website copy or other written work. Research skills are also essential since virtual assistants are often called on to help a business with marketing or other business analysis. Although every virtual assistant will have unique skills to offer, an ability to operate basic computer word processing, spreadsheet and money management applications are imperative. General business management skills are also essential.
