Creative Scholarships for High School Students
Many college scholarships require students to fill out an application, write an essay, submit letters of recommendation and have an impressive resume of extracurricular activities in order to win any money. High school students with creative tendencies can look beyond traditional scholarships and find scholarships that award them tuition money for creative skills. Creative scholarships for high school students come in many forms and from a variety of sources.

Writing Scholarships
-
High school students with a knack for writing can turn their talents into cash for college with writing scholarships. The Ayn Rand Institute, honoring novelist Ayn Rand, sponsors two essay writing contests for high school students. Both contests ask students to write an essay based on questions from Ayn Rand's novels "The Anthem" and "We the Living." Contest winners receive scholarships worth $30 for semifinalists to $3,000 for first-place winners.
VSA, an international organization for disabled persons, runs an annual playwright contest in which high school students submit scripts for a play about living as a disabled person. Winners receive $2,000 and also get to see their play performed on stage.
Poetry Scholarships
-
Along with essay and other writing contests, high school students can show off their talents and win tuition money through poetry scholarship contests. The National Poets Society of New Jersey sponsors an annual poetry contest open to high school students. The National High School Poetry Contest awards scholarship prizes worth $100 to $500 to winning poetry entries. Winning poems are also published in "National Poetry Quarterly."

Art Scholarships

Students interested in visual arts can also find scholarships that award art-related creativity. The Alliance for Young Writers and Artists offers an annual art and writing contest that awards Portfolio Gold Medal winners in 16 visual art categories with $1,000 to $10,000 scholarships. Other scholarships for art students include the $1,000 Creativity and Citizenship Award and the $1,000 New York Life Award.
Also open to high school students, the Fine Arts Finals allows students to submit visual art entries in nine categories and win $125 to $500 in scholarship money. As of 2010, the contest was only open to high school students in Illinois.
Music Scholarships
-
For students with musical talent, a number of music contest scholarships are available. The Bland Music Scholarship Contest, sponsored by the Lions Club of Virginia, allows students to compete in a music contest to win scholarship money. The contest is held at several local Virginia Lions Clubs, with top winners moving onto the district contest to win even more scholarship money. Winners at the local level receive $200, and first place at the district level receives $2,500 in scholarship money.
