Choosing dishes that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing can be a challenge.

Whether you are choosing tableware for your own dining room or for an event, such as a wedding, the tableware you choose should coordinate with the theme and tone of the room, which could include the theme or era of your decor or the theme of the wedding. The tableware, which includes the dishes, linens, silverware and even centerpieces, will be used and observed at length by your guests, making careful choices advisable.

  1. Vintage

    • Scour antique shops and yard sales or collect dishes from older relatives to create an interesting and eclectic vintage tableware collection. Vintage dishes do not have to match and can even be enhanced through mixing and matching a variety of sets. Vintage tableware sets can use a variety of designs and colors to add interest and make the collection stand out. Use a different place setting for every person at your table, or choose a different vintage tableware set for each different table at the wedding.

    Green

    • Choose tableware items made from eco-friendly materials to create a "green" decor for your dinner or wedding tables. Use dishes that are made from materials that are biodegradable, or choose dishes and tableware items that are constructed from recycled materials. Not only will you be doing a small part to lessen your own carbon footprint, but you could also inspire others to do the same when they see your eye-catching tableware made from "green" materials.

    Themed

    • Whether your home decor has an Indian theme, your wedding has a beach theme or you are simply celebrating a holiday, your tableware choices can assist you in enhancing your selected theme. Choose tableware dishes that are of a specific culture, such as jeweled and sparkling dishes of Indian culture or dishes of a rustic and handmade pottery look of Native American culture. For a beach or tropical theme, choose dishes that reflect the colors of the ocean, such as blues and greens, or use island imagery, such as seashells. For a holiday theme, choose dishes in holiday colors, which for Christmas would be reds, greens, whites and even silvers and golds, for example.

    Artistic

    • Choose tableware items that have artistic influences with color and/or shape. Choose plates, cups and bowls in unconventional shapes for a modern, artistic twist. Choose dishes with unusual and striking colors and decorations. For example, choose plates that reflect abstract imagery or drip painting techniques. Incorporate sleek, modern vases in twisted, slanted shapes for visual interest. Use hand-forged silverware with unusual handles and shapes. Use linens in bright colors with bold designs to contrast the typically simple tablecloths and napkins.
