Home Inventory Check List
Insurance companies that cover your home in case of a fire or a home invasion will often advise you to create a home inventory checklist. A home inventory is a long list of valuables in each room in your home, including the amount of each item you have. An inventory checklist will be helpful if you are ever in need of an insurance claim, due to a fire in the home or burglary. The checklist will also increase the claims process, along with proving tax-deductible items in the home.

Living Room
-
The living room may differ greatly for each home, as some homes have family rooms as well as living rooms. Commonly, the living room covers all types of rooms that contain couches, chairs, bookshelves, wall shelving, books, DVD films, televisions, stereo equipment, additional gaming electronics and rugs. Include the amounts of each item, year purchased and the purchase costs.
Bathroom, Kitchen and Laundry Room
-
The bathroom should include linens, electrical appliances and all of the contents in your bathroom closets. The kitchen and laundry room may be combined on the home inventory list. The kitchen section includes appliances, books, crystal, dishes, dryer, freezer, linens, ironing board, glassware, dishwasher, pots and pans and stove. Washing machine, tables and refrigerators should also be included on the list, along with the amounts, purchase year and costs.
-
Office
-
The office will include books, bookcases and cabinets. Office or desk chairs, couches, fireplace equipment in larger offices and lamps should also be included on the home inventory list. If rugs or additional furniture, like pianos, organs or tables, are present, include these as well. As in the last section, include the amounts of each item, year purchased and the purchase costs.
Bedrooms
-
A Bedroom checklist should include the bed and bedroom furniture. The bedroom inventory list also includes additional furniture, rugs, lamps and tables. Smaller things, such as jewelery, watches and other valuables must be included under the bedroom section. This is because these valuables are often kept in your chests or dressers in the bedroom. It may be difficult to price the valuables, so take them to a jewelery buyer to find the accurate value for pricing.
Dining Room
-
The home inventory checklist will often include a dining room set, different types of crystal dining sets, silverware, wall shelving units and table linens. For each item in your dining room, include the number of silverware you have in your dining room, for example, the year it was purchased and the cost of the items.
Garage
-
Remember to include the garage, attic or basement on your home inventory list. Include your car or other auto equipment you may have stored in your garage, any lawn furniture, garden equipment, tools or additional storage.
