What Does Louisiana Medicaid Pay For?

Although Medicaid is federally funded, each state offers its own unique program. Benefits and eligibility will vary, depending on the state. Louisiana's Medicaid program covers a wide range of services, similar to private health insurance. Medicaid can also be used to supplement Medicare. Treatment and service may be offered based on age, medical condition or income.

  1. Routine and Specialty Care

    • Medicaid covers routine care visits for adults and children, as well as sick visits. Most prescriptions, X-rays and immunizations are covered as needed. Emergency ambulance transportation can be reimbursed if determined to be the only advisable mode of transportation for the patient. Other services include mental heath and psychiatric care, prenatal and postpartum care, podiatry, chemotherapy and chiropractic.

    Dental Services

    • Medicaid provides dental care to qualified applicants. Services are reserved for children and young adults under 21 and pregnant women. Medicaid recipients over 21 are eligible for dentures, denture relines and denture repairs.

    Hearing and Vision

    • Medicaid will pay for hearing aids for individuals up to 20 years of age. The program covers the cost of the hearing aids and any related equipment such as earpieces and batteries. All repairs for the hearing aid will also be covered. Patients under 21 are eligible for eye exams and eye treatment for conditions, such as cataracts. Glasses are also paid for by Medicaid, if necessary. Contacts are covered if determined to be the only means for improving vision. Adults over 21 will also receive eye examinations for vision and conditions.

    Home Health

    • Louisiana Medicaid pays for home health treatment and care. If deemed necessary, the patient will receive intermittent or part-time nursing services. A physician must approve the treatment. In addition to the aide visits, patients can receive in-home physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech or language therapy.
