High School Preparation to Become a Paramedic

Paramedics have a greater role than many other first responders as they are responsible for administering intravenous treatments, operating diagnostic equipment and interpreting test results while transporting the patient to the hospital. To prepare for the responsibilities of a paramedic, a high school student can focus on several key subject areas to improve their chances of earning their certification quickly.

High School Diploma

Paramedic certification courses require students training to become paramedics to earn their high school diploma before they can take their certification examination. If an applicant hasn't earned a high school diploma and she isn't currently studying for it, she can instead earn her GED equivalency to fulfill the requirement. Some Montessori high schools offer diploma programs with a concentration in paramedic courses, which prepare students to take their certification examination upon graduation.

Health

Health and related sciences, such as biology, are good preparatory courses for high school students who want to become paramedics. Paramedics are required to have an intimate knowledge of human anatomy and basic medical procedures. Health and biology courses have components on human anatomy and some first aid procedures.

Computer Science

Computer science and technology courses give a high school student exposure to different types of technologies. This is very important for paramedics who are surrounded by many different types of technology in ambulances and hospitals. In work situations, paramedics may have to use diagnostic equipment to test patients, read printed reports or digital monitors and interpret the results.

Extracurricular Activities

Many high schools offer first aid courses and programs certifying students in certain first aid procedures. Earning these certifications during high school can greatly speed up the process needed later to earn your paramedic certification. Helpful extracurricular programs for hopeful paramedics include first aid, CPR and emergency medical technician (EMT) practices. These courses will teach students medical procedures that go beyond basic first aid procedures taught in health classes. Driver's education classes are also useful for paramedics interested in driving ambulances.
