Applying for a passport doesn't need to be stressful.

A passport can be thought of as a pass to explore the world and an opportunity for travel and adventure. Thus, getting a passport for the first time can be a very exciting endeavor. Applying for a passport isn't a difficult process and doesn't need to be stressful. However, there are some very important aspects involved that shouldn't be taken lightly. Avoiding common mistakes and knowing what to expect will help the process run smoothly.

  1. Apply in Advance

    • Perhaps the most important tip for applying for your passport is to complete your application as far in advance of the date you need it by. Ask the passport office the current processing time for passport applications. It could take up to six weeks to receive your passport. Fill-in the application with this in mind while leaving even more time just in case anything goes wrong with the application and it's sent back for revisions. Filling-out the application in advance will quell any worries about not receiving it in time for your travels.

    Follow Photo Requirements

    • Passport applicants are required to submit two identical passport photos that follow a strict set of regulations. If the photos aren't taken properly, the application will be sent back and a passport won't be granted. Applicants must make sure the photos are 2-by-2 inches in size with the face measuring from 1 inch to 1 3/8 inches. Photos must be clearly focused with the individual facing directly forward. Individuals shouldn't wear any hats and hair should be pulled back and away from the face.

    Use Original Documents

    • The passport application requires applicants to submit proof of U.S. citizenship in one of the following forms: a previously issued U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, consular report of birth abroad, naturalization certificate or certificate of citizenship. Documents must be originals and cannot be photocopied. If the documents aren't original, the application will be sent back and the passport won't be granted. All original documents will be sent back to the applicant with his new passport after the process is completed.

    Consult an Expediting Service

    • If for whatever reason you don't think that your passport application will be processed in time for your travels, it's possible to use a passport expediting service that can ensure your passport is processed within 24 hours. Passport expediting companies will charge you for their services, but are the only option for must-have passport situations. It's important for applicants who want to use an expediting service to make sure the company is approved by the U.S. Department of State to deliver passport applications for the purpose of expedition.
