Use cotton balls to create clouds for craft projects.

Children learn to express creativity through arts and crafts as well as other activities. Using different textures and materials helps to add some variety and dimension to the project results. Cotton balls have a color and texture similar to clouds, making them the perfect material to use in crafts that include clouds.

  1. Clouds On Scenery

    • Children often draw pictures of scenery including the sun, some birds and fluffy white clouds. Allow them to include a three-dimensional aspect by using cotton balls to make clouds on the pictures they draw. Have them draw pictures of any type of scenery that includes the sky. Give each child a few cotton balls and some white glue. Instruct them to apply a small dot of glue to each cotton ball and press them onto the sky of the picture.

    Hanging Clouds

    • Allow children to create hanging clouds to hang in their rooms or anywhere they like. Give each child a polystyrene ball or oval in any size. Give them several cotton balls and instruct them to tear the cotton balls apart, creating long fluffy sections of cotton strands. Have the children cover the polystyrene shapes in white glue and cover them with the cotton to create clouds. Insert one end of an ornament hook into some white glue and stick it into the polystyrene shape. Allow the glue to dry and hang the ornament hooks over any hook or rod to suspend the clouds.

    Group Cloud Project

    • Looking for shapes in the clouds is something nearly every child does. Imagination allows them to see shapes and objects made up of clouds in the sky. Have a group of two or more children look up at the sky and pick out shapes and images they see. Have them sketch those images on a large sky blue poster board with pencil. Give them cotton balls and glue, instructing them to glue the cotton balls in place over the drawn shapes. The result is a poster of the sky as the children have seen it that day, imaginative shapes and all.

    Cloud and Rainbow

    • Help children create a rainbow craft with a cotton ball cloud attached. Give each child a piece of cardboard and allow them to draw a cloud shape on each one. Cut the clouds out with a utility knife for them to avoid injuries. Allow the children to glue cotton balls to cover one side of each cloud. Allow the glue to dry and flip the clouds over so the cardboard back is facing upward. Cut streamers, for each color of the rainbow, about 3 feet long. Do this for each cloud and glue them onto the back of the clouds so the streamers hang like a rainbow.
