Responsibilities of a Baptismal Sponsor
Baptismal sponsors, which are also known in many Christian faiths as godparents, are present at the time of a young child's baptism. These sponsors advocate for the child to enter the church and become a child of God. The baptismal sponsor stands with the parents at the time of the baptism and they support the family in the religious faith.
-
Christian Guidance
-
The baptismal sponsor should be a family member or friend who participates in the same faith as the child and who is willing to give the child long-term guidance when it comes to the child's religion. The baptismal sponsor will be viewed as someone whom the child can turn to and ask questions about the religious belief system.
Church Participant
-
The chosen baptismal sponsor must participate actively in the church setting and should be willing to continue to participate in the church throughout the child's life. A recommended sponsor who does not voluntarily participate in church will not be allowed to sponsor the child.
-
Role Model
-
Christian children need role models to look up to. A baptismal sponsor will be the child's role model for life, and he should have good moral standing and stability. Do not choose someone to sponsor your child if he does not act like a Christian of good standing.
Instructor of Faith
-
The baptismal sponsor agrees to instruct the child and teach her about the Christian faith if her parents are ever absent. This ensures that the child has a chance to continue to grow in the church even if some misfortune falls upon the parents or they drift away from the church.
