Costumes to Make for Being in a Wheelchair

If you or someone you know is confined to a wheelchair, finding the right Halloween costume can be a difficult task. The traditional Halloween costumes are often hidden by the sides and back of the wheelchair, not to mention the hassle of getting around other trick-or-treaters or members of a Halloween party. It is, however, possible to make your own Halloween costume using the wheelchair as a throne, carriage or car.

  1. Cinderella

    • Create a costume of Cinderella in her carriage for a wheelchair-bound child or adult. Purchase shimmery tulle in a silver or icy blue color from your local fabric store. Find a Cinderella costume (dress, shoes and tiara) from any costume store when Halloween is approaching. Wrap the tulle around the wheelchair, both behind the back and around the sides and front. This makes the effect of the silver and blue Cinderella carriage.

    Fred Flinstone

    • Turn your wheelchair into Fred Flinstone driving his car with a Fred Flinstone costume and cardboard. Duplicate the car by attaching pieces of cardboard to the back, front and sides of the wheelchair with cut-out pieces of cardboard. Get creative and realistic as you want here. Spray paint the back, front and sides with brown paint. Spray paint the wheels white. You can get a Fred Flinstone costume at any costume or Halloween store to wear.

    King or Queen

    • Create a throne for the king or queen to sit on out of your wheelchair. Cut out a piece of fabric to the shape of the back of a throne, and attach it to the back of your wheelchair. Wrap the cardboard and wheelchair with gold or silver fabric found from any fabric store. Attach jewels (plastic, glass or crystal) to the fabric to make it appear like a throne. Dress in a king or queen costume purchased at any costume or Halloween store.

    Pumpkin

    • A pumpkin costume is great for a child that is wheelchair-bound during Halloween. Cover the wheelchair with either an orange trash bag or orange fabric. Using a large black sharpie pen, draw the eyes, nose and mouth onto the fabric or trash bag. Dress the child in orange tights or pants, and a long-sleeved orange shirt. You can also find many pumpkin costumes that include the green stem hat to add an extra touch.

    Professor X

    • Professor X from the X-men is also wheelchair bound, which makes his character a great choice for Halloween. This is an easy costume to assemble. Dress in a suit and tie. If you do not already own one, you can find a suit at thrift stores or garage sales. If you're not bald like Professor X is, purchase a latex bald cap from any costume or Halloween store to finish this costume.
