China offers a range of scholarships to international students

Because of China's increasing importance on the world stage, a growing number of international students are studying in China. International students at Chinese Universities typically take up language, business and political courses. Tuition fees at Chinese Universities vary considerably, and the Chinese government offers a variety of scholarships aimed at further increasing the number of international students.

  1. Chinese Government Scholarship Scheme

    • China's Ministry of Education offers full and partial scholarships to students who wish to take up degrees that are conducted in the Chinese language. Eligible students may pursue any degree, and scholarships are awarded according to both financial need and academic excellence. The degree is funded for its entire duration. If you do not speak Mandarin, a two-year language preparatory course is also funded. Full scholarships exempt the student from tuition and accommodation expenses. A monthly living stipend ranging from 1,400 to 2,000 RMB -- about $210 to $300 U.S. in 2011 -- is included. The partial scholarship includes selected elements of the full scholarship.

    The Great Wall Fellowship

    • Set up by UNESCO and the Chinese Government, the Great Wall Fellowship offers scholarships to visiting international scholars conducting research at Chinese universities or institutions. The award amounts are identical to that of the Chinese Government Scholarship Scheme, but they are available for up to a maximum of one year in duration. Medical insurance is included. Students must prove that they are fluent in Mandarin if they are to take courses conducted in Chinese.

    China/Shanghai Cooperation Organization Scholarship Scheme

    • Students who come from member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization are eligible for this scholarship, which funds degree programs for their duration. The scholarship includes a tuition fee waiver and accommodation fee waiver, plus a monthly stipend of 1,400 to 2,000 RMB. A one-time settlement subsidy, which ranges from 1,000 to 1,500 RMB -- about $150 to $230 U.S. in January 2011 -- is awarded to new students. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization includes China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Scholarship for Foreign Teachers of Chinese Language

    • This scholarship is aimed at fostering the teaching of the Chinese language abroad. Eligible students must be fluent in Mandarin. Free accommodations, tuition, emergency medical care and a one-time living subsidy of 2,000 RMB is included. The scholarship is part of a six-week training course conducted at Beijing Language and Culture University, which includes a two-week teaching tour of Chinese cities including Xi'an, Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuzhen, Hangzhou and Shanghai.
