Zoar is a small village in east-central Ohio. German immigrants founded it in 1817 as a communal society. Today this section of Tuscarawas County is known for its Old World charm and many of the original buildings have been restored. The Ohio Historical Society maintains the 12-block historic district. Four buildings have been repurposed to accommodate the many visitors who come to the area.

Zoar School Inn

Zoar's first schoolhouse was built in 1836 and it has served the community in several capacities through the years. When a new brick schoolhouse was built in 1868, the structure was used to house multiple families. Today, the building has four rooms with ensuite bathrooms and period furniture. Internet is available throughout the hotel. European tradition is also observed and guests are asked to bring slippers and avoid wearing shoes in the house. Breakfast is served each morning at 8 a.m. then again at 9 a.m.
The Cider Mill Gift Shop and Bed & Breakfast

The Cider Mill bed & breakfast began life as a cider mill in 1863 and continued operation until 1950. In 2007, it was opened as a bed & breakfast with a gift shop that features the work of American artisans. Zoar is just minutes from Amish country. Nearby activities include hiking and sight seeing. Kayaking is available on the Tuscarawas River.

Zoar Tavern & Inn

The Zoar Tavern & Inn is an example of German architecture using logs and timber. The structure was originally built to house the village doctor. The house has been said to be haunted. The tavern serves traditional German cuisine and the menu also features seafood, steaks and sandwiches.
The Cobbler Shop Bed and Breakfast

Originally known as building #22, the Cobbler Shop was used to make boots and shoes for the original settlers of Zoar. It also housed as many as three families -- the rooms have been preserved in their original state. The building is furnished with period antiques and the outdoor gardens and seating areas are under old cherry trees. A large screened-in porch allows visitors to lounge in front of the TV or play card games. Modern amenities include wireless Internet throughout the property. The property also features an antique shop with period furniture, china and redware.
