The Average Income for a Park Ranger

A park ranger is a government employee who works for the National Park Service. These professionals ensure parks are safe and maintained, and also assist visitors in understanding the nature and history of the park. Although government jobs are regulated and starting salaries are similar for this occupation, salaries can vary by the cost of living in different areas as well as the experience of a park ranger. In January 2010, PayScale reported wages based on park rangers participating in its salary survey.

Job Requirements

The minimum education required for this occupation is a high school diploma or GED. Some national parks require a bachelor's degree. Like most occupations within a government agency, all candidates must pass a background check and drug screening. These professionals must also have a valid driver's license, because this occupation requires driving from one location to another.

Average Salaries

Of those reporting their wages to PayScale, average salaries range from $21,732 to $41,333 per year. Park rangers who work full-time also receive benefits such as medical, dental and vision care, paid time off, retirement savings and pension plan, tuition reimbursement, and life insurance. Some park rangers work on a seasonal or part-time basis.

Salary Grade

All government employees are paid on a salary matrix based on grade and series levels. Those with little or no experience often start at grade-five series one wages, which is approximately $15 per hour. Park ranger positions that require more extensive travel in specific geographical areas may receive a salary increase. An example includes park rangers employed in the state of Alaska, who earn grade seven wages, typically starting at $21.08 per hour.

Experience

The majority of park rangers reporting their wages have less than 10 years of experience. Those with one to four years of experience earn average salaries ranging from $20,500 to $40,805 per year. Those with five to nine years of experience earn average salaries ranging from $36,649 to $50,249 per year.
